Best Backpacking Podcast

Episode 70: Choosing the right trail map

On this episode we share WHICH trail map is best for you and how it can differ depending on WHERE you are backpacking. Maps offer you a way to read the terrain in a way you cannot visually see from your point of view. We will define the different boundaries and which government entity governs them. Along with a TIP on which map you should ALWAYS have in your car and how to begin using maps to your advantage!

What we talk about:

  • How did we not see a 50 mile wide hole in the ground
  • I prefer to be “old school” in the backcountry – Ariane
  • Let’s talk about “Boundaries”.
  • This map type is most useful when planning a trip
  • Make sure you understand how to read topography
